One of the old giants of American physics Harold (Hal) Lewis, professor at Princeton, Berkeley, Bell Labs, and Uni Cal Santa Barbara has finally resigned from the American Physical Society (APS) after protracted efforts to get them to appoint a panel to reconsider alarmist pronouncements on global warming. He says the premier professional associations of American physicists has been corrupted by government grants and zealotry.

In public pronouncements the warmists - the ideologists of global warming - tell us that the science is "settled." Global temperatures are on an inexorable and dangerous upward trend, they claim.

Baltimore's commentator HL Mencken (1880-1956) wrote: "The whole aim of popular politics is to keep the populace alarmed, and hence clamorous to be led to safety by menacing (them) with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

William Happer of Princeton University's physics department is a scientist who deserves respect for standing up for science over passionately held environmental baloney.

"The current alarm over global warming is mistaken," he told the senate environment committee during hearings on Capitol Hill Dec 22.

Environmental extremists have gained sponsorship of a bill in the Maryland general assembly which would halt work on the Inter County Connector tollroad in Montgomery County. The bill HB1416 would require a study of the 'greenhouse gas' emissions impact of opening this road.

It seems that everyone knows what we have to do to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - get out of our cars and into transit - and move from our suburban detached houses to high-rise condominiums in the core. That is the basis of California Attorney General Jerry Brown's intervention in the San Diego (SANDAG) regional planning process. This is both unnecessary and could lead to substantially less economic growth and higher levels of poverty.
