Public private confusion TERMINOLOGY


The New Maine Times has been running a three part "Investigations" piece on the Maine Turnpike Authority.  It repeatedly refers to the Maine Turnpike Authority as a "private corporation." After Tiger Woods wrecked his car on a neighbor's fire hydrant and a tree recently in Orlando FL the celebrity golf champ was cited by police for the misdemeanor charge of "Careless driving". A more serious variant is "Reckless driving."

In Ontario, a supposed English-speaking territory of Canada this same traffic offense is called "Undue care and attention".

NETRMA has "underrun" - new term coined


Tollers in northeast Texas have coined a new term: "underrun". It's the flipside of overrun. A statement says the last meeting of the North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NETRMA) board voted among other items "to request that TxDOT reallocate the construction cost underrun on Toll 49 Segment 3B to Toll 49 Segment 5."

That's one for cost-overrun wonks Bent Flyvbjerg and Robbie Bain to note.
