Tolls on the Capital Beltway in N Virginia- Transurban begins publicity for 495 Express Lanes


Publicity has started for the new toll lanes on the I-495 Capital Beltway due to open late in the year. To be known as 495 Express Lanes they consist of a self-contained 2x2 lane tollroad within a freeway.

Washington DC area traffic down, but Metro rail going down more


Traffic on urban arterials in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia is currently down about 2% on the year-ago numbers according to FHWA's Office of Highway Policy Information. That knocks out last year's 1% recovery. Toll facilities in the area - Baltimore tunnels and bridges, the two Dulles area tollroads are more or less tracking that decline.

1,650 lane-mile self-financing $52b toll lane network for Washington DC area, 12.5% less congestion


A report by Washington DC metro area planners says adding toll lanes to the expressway network, converting HOV lanes and pricing some other lanes would generate nearly sufficient toll revenues to pay for the cost, improve travel times and achieve major reductions in congestion.
