After more than a decade of wishful thinking about transit as the centerpiece of reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge  (TZB) over the Hudson River north of New York City plus rail and bus in some 30 miles of the corridor, state governor Andrew Cuomo has slimmed the project down to replacing the highway bridge - which has a chance to be substantially funded with toll revenues.

Your editor was characterized by Maine Turnpike spokesman Dan Paradee a couple of days ago as "sort of off the wall." We were grateful for Dan's "sort of" qualification there, reflecting no doubt the fact that our professional relations over many years have been cordial and generally productive. He went on however about your editor: "He knows nothing about Maine, nothing about the Maine Turnpike."

A bridge-builder and private investors are promising to do what City officials in Chesapeake Virginia thought was impossible - replace a decrepit 80 year old draw bridge with a modern high level structure at no cost to taxpayers. And they say they can get the new bridge open within 18 months.
