The Detroit Windsor Tunnel (DWT) is taking another step toward the phase-out of tokens once the major currency in which commuters paid their tolls. Starting officially Monday Nov 12 they will read proximity ('prox') cards brandnamed NEXPRESS in the toll lanes on the Canadian side. The cards are already read on the US side.
Fake bomb threat causes Detroit Windsor Tunnel closure for 4 hours
The Detroit Windsor Tunnel was closed for about four hours following a fake bomb threat. An employee at the Canadian duty-free store in Windsor reported receiving the threat by telephone at about 12:30 Thursday.

American Roads LLC operators of the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel say they're nearing completion of upgrades to their US plazawhere there has been construction for the past 26 months. They've added an eleventh entry inspection lane to the previous ten used by the US Customs and Border Protection service. Border clearance is usually the bottleneck at international crossings.

Both run privately held Detroit-Windsor toll crossing operations less than two miles apart. They cater to fairly comparable traffic volumes (last year the Bridge 7.2m to the Tunnel 3.8m). Neal Belitsky of Detroit Windsor Tunnel LLC though is just not in the same league as a local celebrity compared to the Ambassador Bridge company's Matty Moroun.

The Detroit Windsor Tunnel began electronic toll collection using a proximity card
brandnamed NEXPRESS at their US plaza July 7. And they plan to be operating it at their Canada toll plaza before the end of the year. They have readers in all six toll lanes of their US plaza.
