Operators report March up 4.9% over 2011-03, car travel stronger, trucks weak


Tollers on the eleven crossings on the NY-MI borders with Canada report traffic in March was 3.07m vs 2.93m in March 2011, a rise of 4.9%. Trucks were down a bit 597k vs 609k March last year, so strength was cars 2.46m vs 2.31m 6.7% up.

Numbers are compiled by the Public Border Operators Association (PBOA) which comprise owners of the ten international bridges and one tunnel.

Toronto's H407 being extended east as a state tollroad (ADDITIONS)


Highway 407 is being expanded east and local reports are that Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin has been chosen for an approximate $1 billion design-build contract for the first phase of Highway 407 East (H407E). However Bob Nichols spokesman for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation says these reports are incorrect.

Michigan DOT hopes for P3 law this year to allow new Detroit River toll bridge to Canada


Michigan DOT say they expect to have a law in place for a P3 concession to build a new international toll bridge over the Detroit River before the end of the year. HB4961 is the bill. The Canadians already have the legal framework for a toll concession.

Michigan DOT envisage a "partnership" with Transport Canada, the national DOT with defined roles for other stakeholders such as FHWA, Ministry Transportation Ontario and border services agencies.

Michigan DOT (MDOT) and the federal Transport Canada are requesting for expressions of interest  (RFEOI) in some kind of toll concession or partnership with the private sector in building a new toll bridge over the Detroit River a couple of miles downriver of the Ambassador Bridge.
