How word meanings change inadvertently, and advertently LITTLE ESSAY

Car: in America in 1900 you waited by the side of the street for a 'car'  and the car was a public transit vehicle that ran on rails in the center of the street. Car was then short for streetcar. The word car is probably a shortening of carriage, a horsedrawn vehicle that could be private, for hire or public transit, the predecessor of a bus. But the term streetcar seems to have given way to 'trolley' in America and 'tram' in Britain and Australia, these terms referring to the electric power pickup mechanisms overhead after their propulsion was electrified.
