2013-11-22: There’s talk the PANYNJ is canceling or has cancelled the controversial new $82m new toll system contract with ETCC. One source says the contract is being cancelled, the other that it has been canceled but we haven’t been able to get either an official confirmation or denial out of PANYNJ.
The project is seriously behind schedule - apparently 15 to 18 months behind.
2013-09-16: The US Government Accountability Office (USGAO) has published a 56 page report laying the ground for the federal government to get involved in oversight and toll rate setting at bistate toll authorities.
PANYNJ paid major premium to dump Xerox/ACS, now substitute is 15 to 18 months behind on new toll system
2013-09-11: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) paid a major premium in buying a new toll system from ETC Corp, we've been told, not because they were especially enamored of the proposal or the proposer but because the established supplier and lowest bidder Xerox/ACS was seriously out of favor at the Authority - quite why we haven't been able to establish.
Toll traffic in slight drift downward in New York area, toll facilities in decent shape to cope with likely slight recovery
2013-09-04: New York metro area toll crossings' traffic in 2012 continued its slight drift downward, the trend evident since 2007.
2013-05-15: The Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) authorized large contracts for improvements to the three NY-NJ toll bridges on Staten Island at their latest board meeting.
26 year old loll collector William Bradshaw is up on grand larceny charges for stealing what may total about $75,000 in toll money at the PANYNJ's Staten Island bridges, according to a report by Stephanie Slepian of the Staten Island Advance. He was arrested last Thursday by PA police. They caught him failing to 'register' vehicles and pocketing the money.
Bradshaw confessed to detectives they said in court papers filed with the charges. He called his actions "stupid" and claimed he'd never stolen anything before in his life. He said he wanted to cooperate.
Governors Christie (NJ) and Cuomo (NY) in their different ways both seem to be take-charge, commonsense, no-nonsense, straight-talkers. Yet neither of them lift a finger to reform the behemoth that is one of the most dysfunctional toll operations in the nation - often a laughing stock of the toll industry.
2013-02-14: The USEPA is making a mockery of President Obama's announced 'fast-tracking" of the PANYNJ project to raise the roadway deck of the Bayonne Bridge for larger ships. At about 150ft, 46m navigation clearance the bridge over the Kill Van Kull channel cannot admit the new generation of larger container ships to the Port of Newark NJ, the largest port on the US east coast.
The Port Authority NYNJ under Contact Us on their website have a Media Relations Department and neatly provide the names of ten media relations officers. It also gives their address:
225 Park Avenue South - 18th Floor New York, NY 10003
Which means that you can stop by and make your inquiry in person if you happen to be in Midtown Manhattan. Or write them a letter.
2012-12-04: A New York watchdog research group Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) says the Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ or just PA) overpays its police officers relative to other police forces in the area.
