PANYNJ to get new toll system allowing move to all-electronic/cashless


Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) will completely replace their existing toll system with one allowing easy conversion to all-electonic toll (AET) collection. The new system will support existing cash collection so the move to all-electronic or cashless tolling can be made separately from the switchover from old to new systems.

Port Authority New York New Jersey could abandon cash toll collection in 2012 on present planning. They would be the first big bridge and tunnel authority to implement all-electronic tolling (AET) in the US and one of the first in the world after the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia which went all-electronic in January this year. A perk for present and past employees of the Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) has been criticized by the governor of New Jersey Jon Corzine. The Star Ledger newspaper reported the PANYNJ acknowledgement of the perk and the state governor's disapproval Monday.

Local reports suggest that the Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) will consider toll increases after next week's New Jersey elections. The authority which operates six northern New Jersey-New York City crossings hasn't had a toll increase for six years.
