Mary Peters call at a recent IBTTA industry conference for
"making toll booths obsolete" got attention from ACT the Puerto Rico state toll authority. A senior ACT official told us this morning the authority's decision to study cashless or all-electronic tolling was prompted by Peters' remarks.

Miami Dade Expressway Authority's (MDX) procurement of a cashless toll system planned to begin procurement early September will ask for an option to take over customer service from Florida Turnpike Enterprise's SunPass, says Steve Andriuk, director of operations. Our earlier report - without the benefit of a conversation with Andriuk - said handling of transponder transactions would remain with FTE's SunPass.
Texas 183A tollroad in Austin going cashless before year's end

Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority board have voted to eliminate cash toll collection on their 183A toll road northwest of Austin by the end of 2008. The decision is expected to save the agency more than $1 million annually in operating costs.
North Carolina Turnpike announces first toll rates - 13.5c/mile 8.4c/km

North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) announced its first toll rates - a base toll of 13.5c/mile (8.4c/km) for cars using transponders. The tolling on the Triangle Expressway in the western area of Raleigh is due to begin in December 2010.

Some of the busiest toll facilities in America could go cashless if a study and design effort is positive. The Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) has embarked on a two year $9m "study and preliminary design" for all-electronic toll collection. This would mean the elimination of existing toll plazas and their replacement by overhead gantries bearing transponder readers and license plate imaging cameras.
