2013-04-15: The Toll Roads as they are branded in Orange County California are due to go cashless and all-electronic (AET) in the spring of 2014 according to announcement of contracts the boards of the Transportation Corridors Agencies have just approved with TransCore.

2013-03-26: The Golden Gate Bridge toll booths will be empty Wednesday morning by the time you read this - the first time in 75 years of the bridge existence. The plan was that sometime after midnight Tuesday night Pacific time they'd "cut over" to a new all-electronic toll system. The last toll collectors were due to leave their booths for the last cash collection shift in the early minutes of Wednesday. at around 00:01.

2013-03-04: Maine's New Gloucester toll plaza is set to begin open road electronic toll (ORT) collection April 1. It's got one highspeed (65mph) lane  leftside each direction through the toll plaza area. The single highspeed lanes were built in an area occupied by islands and booths for two stop-to-pay/roll-through lanes under canopy.

2013-02-17: The New York State Thruway is converting two mainline and one side toll plaza to all electronic or cashless toll collection.

2012-10-18: America's biggest toller New York's MTA Bridges & Tunnels will do their first conversion to all electronic tolling (AET) Saturday November 10 at 11pm. That's at the Henry Hudson Bridge (HHB) a cars-only commuter parkway-connected crossing over the Harlem River at the very northern tip of Manhattan Island to the Spuyten Duyvil/Riverdale section of the Bronx and to Westchester County.

2012-08-23: New Hampshire DOT has its second open road tolling (ORT) project under way at the Hooksett toll plaza on the I-93 Turnpike north of Manchester. Central toll lanes of the 14 lane plaza are being closed off this week to allow demolition of booths and islands so that 2x2 ORT lanes can be constructed through the center.

It starts with an ugly but catchy picture of heavy equipment demolishing an old stop-to-pay toll plaza, moves to the new overhead signs for AET - SunPass over TOLL-BY-PLATE. And up flashes the question NO TOLLBOOTH, then the answer NO PROBLEM!

Maryland seems likely to take a gradual, facility-by-facility approach going toward all-electronic tolling (AET).

Golden Gate Bridge board of directors voted today (Jan 28) to end cash toll collection at the iconic San Francisco bridge with conversion to all-electronic toll (AET) collection. The vote was 13 for AET, 2 against. Yesterday (Jan 27) the Finance Committee voted for AET by 8 to 3. The schedule presented by staff aims to go fully live with AET between September and December 2012.

North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) will collect their last cash toll around 12:01am Saturday Dec 11, they say in an announcement today. This will mark the largest system conversion to all-electronic tolling - transponder or license plate reads at highway speed - in North America so far.
