2% of VA/E-ZPass accounts unused for 12 months
Just over two percent of around 560,000 E-ZPass in Virginia or 11,567 accounts in April this year were deemed "inactive," a status they earn after showing no toll transaction for 12 months. That's according to Virginia DOT which runs the E-ZPass operation for all toll agencies in the state. And larger percentages apparently are unused for 6 months and 3 months.
It is this percentage of customers who get an electronic toll transponder, then hardly use it, that has got many tollers implementing a monthly fee. The problem of wasted transponders is understandably most serious where they are in effect "given away" without an intial charge.
Virginia E-ZPass asks only for some prepaid tolls and the automatic replenishment link of the account to a bank card or account.
The state has recently announced that new E-ZPass accounts will incur a 50c/month.
