I-80 open road tolling at Delaware Riv delayed, I-78 ORT on time

Conversion of I-80 at the Delaware River to open road tolling (ORT) is being delayed a bit. Announced last year for the end of May (Memorial Day) the schedule has slipped to the end of November (Thanksgiving).

Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission spokesman Joe Donnelly tells us the delay is due to some revisions to the curvature of the roadway. Construction bids had been sought based on roadway plans since somewhat modified. Those bids are being rejected and new bids will be requested again based on the revised plans.

Postponement will allow construction road closures to be avoided during the summer when traffic is at a peak.

Installation of ORT equipment is scheduled from September onward for the planned opening to traffic at the end of November.

Final paving will be done next spring.

The total project cost of ORT conversion at the I-80 bridge is estimated to be $7.5m.(CORRECTION)

Tolling is in one direction.

ACS won the contract for the toll systems work January last year.

ETCC will be doing the back office processing of the open road toll transactions.

Donnelly tells us the I-78 conversion for open road tolling is on schedule for the end of May.
