Aecom/GP/PB get $164m contract for construction management on widening New Jersey Turnpike
A joint venture of Aecom, Greenman-Pedersen (GPI) and Parsons Brinckerhoff will be paid $164m for construction management services on the New Jersey Turnpike $2.5b widening project getting under way. The contract has just been signed. The three engineering firms will be responsible for supporting the Turnpike Authority during the construction.
The widening covers 35 miles of the Turnpike (56km) between MP83 and MP48.
Involved in the project is:
- 3rd laning the outer pair of roadways IC8A to IC9 in East Brunswick over a 16km (10 mile) stretch to make the Turnpike 3/3/3/3 in place of the present 2/3/3/2 lanes format
- adding a pair of extra three-lane roadways south from IC8A Monroe Twp through IC7 to IC6 Mansfield Twp for 40km (25 miles) so the Turnpike becomes 3/3/3/3 lanes like the Turnpike to the north in place of the present 3/3 lanes.
- rebuilding/additions to the interchanges and overbridges![]()
- relocating IC8 toll plaza and adding to IC7A toll plaza
The project involves adding some 274 lane-km or 170 lane-miles which works out at $9.1m/lane-km
($14.7m/lane-mile.)
The Turnpike calls the four roadway format dual-dual. The outer pair of roadways are for all vehicles (cars/trucks/buses) while the inner roadways are cars only.
All three lane roadways have full breakdown should both sides, and all interchanges have direct connector ramps to all roadways. There is no weaving across roadway to roadway.
A bunch of the construction contracts were awarded in November and December last year. Work is expected to begin seriously as the weather warms up in the next few months.
