South Jersey toller gets praise for wildflower displays

South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) operators of the Atlantic City Expressway (ACE) get plaudits locally for the wildflower display they maintain in their median during the spring, summer and fall. Press of Atlantic City, the local newspaper comments: "a lot of people would like to have their yards looking as good as the Expressway's median."

ACE's wild grasses are seeded with a mix of Cosmos pinks with a scattering of whites and reds.

A spokesman says SJTA's maintenance guys have developed the present seed formula over about ten years of trial and error with seed supplier Applewood Seed in Arvada Colorado. The expressway uses close to a ton of seed each year of what Applewood Seed now calls the 'South Jersey Mix'

They say they make significant savings through eliminating mowing.

The wildflowers bloom from mid-May to mid-November.
