Blago's expletives & US Grant's on Mexican mules

Ulysses S Grant writes in his Memoirs of the 1845 campaign into Mexico: "I am not aware of ever having used a profane expletive in my life; but I would have the charity to excuse those who may have done so, if they were in charge of a train of Mexican pack mules..." (p66)
Grant interestingly wrote his splendid Memoirs only because he was made destitute in his retirement by a Bernie Madoff style swindler. He had sworn off writing because he found it hard work and disliked the idea of promoting himself and a book. But when all his investments evaporated in a scam he took publishers up on old offers, and began writing. He's not a flashy writer, but he has one hell of a story to tell, and he tells it very well.
