Toll collection suspended for storm in S Florida
Toll collection has been suspended from 11am Monday (Aug 18) on most toll facilities in southern Florida because of the advance of a major tropical storm:
Exempt from tolls until further notice are
- Florida's Turnpike from its most southern point at US1 right up to IC86 in Palm Beach County
- all Miami-Dade Expressway Authority tollroads including state routes 836, 874, 112, 929 and 878
- Sawgrass Expressway operated by FTE
- Alligator Alley I-75 operated by FDOT
- Rickenbacher and Venetian causeways operated by the county
Reason for the suspension is tradition, speeding traffic flow and allowing toll collectors to seek shelter.
There are severe storm/hurricane warnings also in central Florida for Tropical Storm/possible-Hurricane Fay.
The weather radar shows the storm centering off the east coast of southern Florida. However the Projected Path map of the forecasters shows it centered on the west coast and hitting central Florida Tuesday.
