Edgy design for new PANYNJ Goethals Bridge NJ-NY
Port Authority New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) aka the Seagull has released renderings of a cable stayed design for a new Goethals Bridge. They show an edgy aesthetic of outwardly leaning upwardly bulging towers linked at the top with a sculpted crosspiece, the frames rising between separate roadway decks. There's an empty space in the middle - symbolic? - for a possible transit line.
A PANYNJ officer told us the main tower structures would probably be constructed of steel. The design was selected as the preferred alternative from a number of visual and engineering schemes produced by a team comprising people from PANYNJ, HNTB and Figg Bridge.
The roadways of the bridge are likely to be segmental box girder.
Goethals Bridge carries I-278 over the Arthur Kill tidal waterway that marks the boundary between Staten Island NY and New Jersey.
This bridge provides the major link between the New Jersey Turnpike at IC13 near Newark Airport/Port of Elizabeth and Staten Island NY via the Staten Island Expressway. This in turn leads to the Verrazano Narrows Bridge over the mouth of New York Bay into Brooklyn.
Most defective and deficient bridge
Carrying close to 80k veh/day average, 12% trucks it must be the most defective and deficient bridge in the US interstate system. Opened in 1928 it has a deck of just 12.8m (42ft) curb to curb. With a concrete abrrier in the center the lanes are barely 3m (10ft) yet it carries trucks up to 2.59m (102in) wide.
The new bridge will have three full 12ft (3.66m) travel lanes each direction to match the Staten Island Expressway and a full breakdown shoulder rightside each direction plus a bicycle/pedestrian lane.
PANYNJ proposes building the bridge to the immediate south of the existing bridge, and the renderings are based on this. However there are also arguments for having it on the north side.
The old bridge has some 2165m (1.3 miles) total length of elevated structure with a center span of 205m (672ft) with overhead clearance for ships of 41m (135ft). the new bridge will have similar dimensions except for the much greater width.
The present bridge has an 8 lane stop-to-pay toll plazas on the east side, but the new bridge will have all-electronic or cashless tolling.
Cost is expected to be around a billion dollars.
Present plans are to award construction contracts in 2011 for the bridge's opening in 2015.
The bridge is one of the six toll crossings between New York and New Jersey operated by the Seagull.
