Video toll demonstrations in North Carolina this week
Nine companies are demonstrating their camera systems in North Carolina over ten days starting
this week. The companies are:
- NDI Technology
- Plate Scan
- Kapsch
- JAI
- IBM Global Business Services
- PIPS Technology
- Genetec
- CRS
- Inex Zamir
North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) has organized the Video Tolling Technology Demonstration which is being done from the Old Reedy Creek Road bridge over I-40 just south of Raleigh Durham International Airport.
The nine demonstrations are being conducted one company at a time with five hours allowed for each company. In addition to visual light cameras, infrared cameras and laser imaging are
being demonstrated.
Traffic on I-40 should not be affected by the trials which use temporary mounts on the over-bridge. Video tolling needs to work at full highway speeds.
NCTA has decided that its toll facilities will not collect cash and will rely on a combination of transponders and video tolling - all-electronic tolling.
JJ Eden chief operating officer of the NCTA says many agencies around the country have expressed interest and are sending observers to the event.
The new Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI) that Eden chairs is giving priority to setting standards to facilitate the sharing of video images of vehicles for toll enforcement and video tolling.
