Eateries off the Jersey Turnpike - great pics in NYTimes

The New York Times reports this morning that "Just off the New Jersey Turnpike, America - and more specifically New Jersey - lives and eats."

That's an intro to a gorgeous set of photographs of intriguing indigenous Jersey eateries just off the Pike.

Sylvia Kapuscinski is the photographer.

PERSONAL NOTE:
We've had the weirdest experiences in a couple of these kinds of off-the-Turnpike places.

They seem to be staffed by natives who understand regular English but who speak in such an extreme Jersey accent that they're incomprehensible to an out-of-stater.

We've got them to repeat a sentence slowly up to three times, and still not understanding a single word, given up and gone to a MacDonald's.

Our advice: only venture off the Turnpike if you've perfected sign language or are accompanied by a Jersey native as your interpreter.
