North Carolina Turnpike providing site for vendors to demonstrate video toll gear
Posted Tue, 2008-03-25 11:30
North Carolina Turnpike Authority is enlisting vendors of toll camera equipment and license plate readers to demonstrate their wares from a bridge over I-40 from May 5 through May 23. The Authority is committed to cashless all-electronic tolling on several toll facilities in the pipeline so they have a major interest in video - which is the replacement for cash toll collection.
NCTA is also a major player in the recently formed Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI) that has given priority to studying ways to improve video tolling and set standards for exchange of video acquired data.
JJ Eden chief operating officer at the Turnpike says other toll agencies are welcome to come see the demonstrations and share the results.
Major aim will be to test the accuracy of video systems in the field and the ability of the optical character recognition. Two or three sets of equipment can be hung from the I-40 bridge at the same time. The bridge was chosen for the low traffic volume that uses it - so not too many toll officers and vendors become victims of NC pickup trucks.
A formal Request for Expressions of Interest for Product Demonstration will be issued April 1 with a deadline for responses April 17.
The demonstrations are expected to be followed by a video procurement but that will be separate.
