Corzine puts $s where mouth is - a personal $500k to press tolls plan

New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine has contributed $500k of his personal funds to set up a new group called Save our State NJ intended to campaign for his tollroads monetization plan, local press reported today. The group is being run by Jennifer Godoski, 30, who resigned from a $109k/yr job as chief of staff at NJDOT recently to take on the role of lobbyist and campaigner.

Godoski worked on Gov Corzine's campaign committee and was a political appointee to NJDOT. Immediately after his eelction she was in charge of arrangements for the governor's inauguration. Prior to working for Corzine she was a legislative aide to two Democrat women assembleymen.

She says the Governor's tollroad plan is "perhaps the most important public policy issue this state has faced in decades."

Save Our State NJ will lobby and campaign. It is a 501(c)4.

Corzine is said to have spent tens of millions of his own money on election campaigns, first for the US Senate then for the governorship. He got rich working for Goldman Sachs where he was chief executive and chairman 1994-99.

The name Save Our State NJ alludes to the Governor's theme that the state is in financial crisis and that monetization of the state tollroads is the best solution. The plan is to use half the proceeds to pay down state debt.

Save our state or our assets?

There is already a group with a similar name - Save Our Assets NJ. That group is campaigning against Corzine's plans. It is run by a lawyer Peter Humphreys.

He says the group is supported by Turnpike employees and trucking companies. It has a website http://www.saveourassetsnj.com/lte/ and distributes  critical news reports and commentaries.

Humphries says his organization is David to the Governor's Goliath.
