Shoulder to auxiliary lane conversion on Dolphin Exwy Miami
At Miami Dade Expressway Authority they are finding a little extra capacity in a busy segment of their Dolphin Expressway (FL836) by converting a shoulder to an auxiliary lane. The $800k project is about 800m (0.5 miles) long between the Palmetto Expressway interchange and NW72 St. The NW72 on ramp is also being widened and new guardrail installed.
Executive Director Javier Rodriguez says the project is "one of the ways we’ve found to optimize existing road, while we work
toward long-term solutions."
The extra lane will reduce merge and weaving problems and simulations show it should cut travel times through the area by up to 30% in heavy traffic conditions. However a 45mph (72km/hr)speed is being posted in the area for safety.
The work is expected to be complete within 3 months.
