A
AAA Mid-Atlantic region survey finds majority support for higher tolls
as the best way to pay for bridge and road repairs. 57% of 772
surveyed supported tolls. However 54% opposed higher gasoline taxes.
The survey also found 58% opposition to leasing toll facilities to
private operators. Â
The survey was not scientific in that it was based only on respondents to questions in a website survey and may not have been a representative cross section of voters. The conclusions are however consistent with better surveys.
Previous surveys have shown a strong preference for tolls over motor fuel taxes for constructing new road capacity.
People apparently understand that fuel taxes get heavily drained by politicians diverting them to other uses - "bridges to nowhere." A small majority, by contrast, think tolls are more likely to be used for the benefit of motorists.
