$20.6m terrorist surveillance system contracted for Delaware River bridges NJ-PA
The upper Delaware River bridges between New Jersey and Pennsylvania are getting a $20.6m detection and surveillance system to protect them against attack and natural disasters like floods, and to improve response to incidents. The security system includes video surveillance, intelligent video, building access control and intrusion detection, a central control center, and communications systems for video, data, and voice transmissions. Â
The program will cover the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission's 20 bridges, including piers, approach roadways,
over and under-passes, toll plazas, and the Commissions administration and maintenance facilities.
DRJTBC operates two interstate toll bridges (I-80 and I-78) and US1 which carry longdistance traffic, local bridges of importance to the economy of the two states as well as several of historic importance. Total traffic over the DRJTBC bridges averages 370k/day.
The surveillance system follows the design of systems installed by Pennsylvania DOT and New Jersey DOT.
Frank G McCartney, executive director of DRJTBC is quoted in a statement:
"We are pleased to be moving forward with the implementation of this system to improve the security and safety of our bridges, the public, and our employees. In addition, to enhancing our security, this system will provide daily benefits to the traveling public by allowing us to respond more rapidly to incidents such as accidents or breakdowns, reducing the impact on traffic and congestion."
The contract was awarded to a team led by Mass Electric Construction Company of Whitestone, New York for design-build and 3 years of maintenance. The contract provides for the system to be operational in 18 months.
