Mass Pike board member calls for shakeup of Big Dig management

Mary Connaughton of the Massachusetts Turnpike Board is calling for new managers of the Big Dig project. She says that Michael Lewis the longtime Turnpike manager for the Big Dig has provided misleading information in recent reports on leaks and other problems in the project.

She cites a Wiss Janney Eistner report which found the leak problem in the tunnels is confounding efforts to plug the inflow of water which remains at constant high levels, contrasting strongly with Lewis' earlier presentation showing major progress.

Connaughton also says the board couldn't get straight answers from Lewis over the escalating cost of high-tech (ITS) systems in the project.

She wants "an objective third party" brought in to manage completion of the $14.8b project.

A spokesman for the Turnpike is saying that everything including staffing is "under review."

Lewis is a consummate survivor. Despite the project's repeated disasters he has outlasted several turnpike chief executives.
