License plate reader PIPS bought by Federal Signal

Federal Signal Corp based in the Chicago area has bought British-based PIPS which is one of the leaders in license plate reading cameras worldwide. PIPS camera systems are in wide use for toll enforcement and video tolling.

The transaction between privately held PIPS and Federal Signal traded on the NYSE is for $115m. PIPS has its American offices in Knoxville TN and its European offices in Hampshire UK.

There are 12,000 PIPS license plate reading cameras deployed worldwide.

Federal Signal will put major emphasis on marketing license plate reading cameras for police and security activity. They also see opportunities in congestion pricing and toll lane schemes.

They predict annual growth averaging around 20% a year in sales.

PIPs gets its name from Pearpoint Image Processing Systems, but Pearpoint is now a separate company.
