Electronic tolling has started on the large toll highway system of Japan. Its a beautiful 5.8GHz system utilizing smart cards for direct payment, and avoiding the need for central accounts. But its pricey: $250 to $400 per transponder, and $60 to $70 just for installation the transponders are hardwired to the 12V electrical circuits of the car. Remains to be seen how many will be used at these prices.
