There is a beautiful porn star called Lexus, but the luxury car of that name is less loved. The car Lexus came up in a conversation recently with a friend about what kind of car she should get now that she had a better paying job, and could afford to get rid of an 8 yr old, 200k on the clock-er.

“No I could never imagine buying one of those,” she said adamantly. Why not, I asked, curious. “Those awful old farts that sit in the left lane driving the speed limit, blocking you, they drive Lexuses,” she said. “They’re slugs. I haaayte them. No way.”

She was projecting the personality of drivers onto the car brand!

Maybe the Lexus brand is doomed by association, as the generations move on, the same way Cadillac was. The younger richies went for BMWs and Acuras, they said, because they didn’t want to look like the old richies in their Cadillacs? And maybe the term Lexus Lanes conveys more than just the notion of luxury, but also a certain comfortable smugness...

And perhaps there is a special problem in single managed lanes? Maybe the Lexuses there too often drive like ‘slugs.’ With the second lane at least you have a chance of getting by.
