TransCore using its acquired Amtech-based backscatter tags is the prime contractor recommended by staff and a consultant team for electronic tolling (ET) in Puerto Rico (PR). But there have been long delays in the recommendation being considered by the board of the PR toll authority. A change of government has left the project in limbo for some months. Originally TransCore and Amtech made separate proposals but by the time the final bids were being made Amtech had been acquired by TransCore, and TransCore proposed the Amtech equipment. Other bidders were Lockheed, Ascom (with Parsons) and CISE of Spain.
The PR toll road system is a large one. It includes the four major motorway standard roads of the island with over 200 toll lanes and about 500k transactions/day.
