Florida has memorialized the most prominent agitator for its turnpike by naming a service plaza after him in West Palm Beach. Charles B Costar, deceased, is credited with being the driving force behind the Florida Turnpike Act of 1953, which led to the state’s major turnpike system being begun. The first section from Miami to Fort Pierce, originally called the Bobtail Turnpike, or Sunshine State Parkway opened Jan 1957. A son and daughter, grandchildren and great-granchildren attended the ceremony.

Now they need to put together a decent little book on the history of the turnpike so motorists don’t think the service plaza commemorates office label printers from Costar Inc.
