FHWA’s PUBLIC ROADS mag has a nice piece on Australian roadside treatments. They don’t invoke ‘safety’ to the same degree as we do in the US to justify leveling every tree along the roadside, she reports. But the author, an FHWA landscaper was sold a wild one. She reported the country has the same population as California. Maybe if you include 15m kangaroos on the Oz-side to bulk up the people numbers. If you’re talking homo-sapienses Australia has more like the population of Texas or Florida. In Calif the greater LA area has about the same pop as Oz - about 20m.
