The investor-owned Dulles Greenway, which only a couple of years ago was seriously short of traffic, now can’t cope. June 2 construction begins on 8km (5mi) of third-laning eastbound from IC-6 in Ashburn (VA-772) to the Gway’s mainline toll plaza on the edge of Dulles airport. Officials hope the widened road ‘in-bound’ (to DC) will be open by the end of the year. In the spring of next year, they plan to start a similar third-laning of the westbound roadway from the toll plaza out to IC-6. The contractor is Lane Construction for $10.4m. The third laning is being done in a wide central median and this stretch has no bridges that need widening.
