The Pennsylvania Turnpike has been printing retail coupons on the back of its toll receipts for a while (see above). But you don’t have to be a trip toll system to do coupon deals. On the Garden State Parkway coupons are also being printed on the back of toll receipts. The Parkway’s NJHA has a contract to print 6m receipts with coupons – for purchases at Staples, Sovereign Bank, Pep Boys and IHOP – for $45k. That’s 3/4c per coupon.

Chairman of the Parkway James Buckelew said: “It is not every day that we can realize an additional source of income that doesn’t come from toll payers and, at the same time, deliver to those very tollpayers something of value in return.”

The Massachusetts Turnpike also has coupons flowing out on the back of its receipts.
