Norway’s Laerdal tunnel on the E16, Oslo to Bergen, has broken through. At 24.5km (15mi) it is the world’s longest tunnel, surpassing the present longest, the St Gotthard of 16.9km (10.3mi) in Switzerland. To open in 2001 the Leardal will cost $130m ($2.7m/lane-km). Norwegian tunnelers, where were you when we needed you in Boston to bid on the Central Artery ($42.0m/lane-km)? US taxpayers will never forgive you for handing the wastrels that job.
