Chicagos ISTHA has raised the posted speed limit on all its I-PASS ONLY lanes from 15mph to 30mph. ISTHA raised the speed limit to bring it more into line with actual speeds used by motorists and because it considers 30mph a safe speed after a year or so of experience.
When we set 15mph we were guessing. There was no experience to go on. WE have now had a chance to closely study electronic toll only lanes and believe a 30mph speed limit makes most sense, an official told us.
I-PASS ONLY lanes are dedicated to electronic tolling but simply retrofitted into existing plazas and operate right alongside staffed and coin machine toll lanes. They are distinct form I-PASS EXPRESS lanes where full highway speed is designed for with concrete Jersey barrier separating the lanes on the approach and exits from traffic stopping to pay collectors or throw coins.
