A deer seems to have been responsible for the first fatal smash on the Eastern Toll Road in southern California. A woman driver was killed witnesses said after she swerved to miss a deer and lost control. The road goes through wild areas of the Santa Ana mountains and deer and other wildlife have been the major problem since it was opened. Early publicity showed deer carcasses being trucked away by maintenance staff. The road has standard Caltrans animal control fence, 5' chainlink. It is unclear it the deer are coming up the ramps or jumping the fences. The LA Times quotes wildlife experts as saying the fences arent high enough. TCA has consultants working on proposals to mitigate the problem.
