Wilbur Smith Associates (WSA) has 750 employees in 28 offices in a bunch of countries. 75% of its work is US, 25% outside the US. It is entirely owned by its employees. It is best known for its traffic and revenue studies for toll projects though it does a lot of engineering design work also.

We once wrote in a moment of hyperbole that WSA was the “Microsoft of traffic and revenue studies.” Wuestefeld told us he wasn’t even sure if the company was the largest in the world in T&R studies, it probably was in the US, but ever the salesman, he quickly said: “We CERTAINLY are the best.”

WSA is headquartered in Columbia SC where Zuelsdorf has been based. Wuestefeld works out of the New Haven CT office, where the company was founded.

Parsons Brinckerhoff earlier announced the promotion of Larry Yermack to director of Toll Roads. He works out of the PB head office in Manhattan. PB is usually rated as the largest transportation engineering company in the US. Yermack has been with PB several years and before that was head of finance at the MTA’s Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority in New York City.

A similar position National Director Toll Facilities was assumed early this year by Anthony J. Barber at HNTB. Barber was appointed to this position from Lockheed Martin where he was VP for ITS. HNTB is perhaps the leading engineering firm working on detailed designs for toll roads in the US. Barber will work out of HNTB’s major northeastern office in Fairfield NJ. The HQ of HNTB is in Kansas City MO. (Contacts Robert Zuelsdorf WSA 803 758 4500, Larry Yermack PB 212 465 5138 , Anthony J Barber HNTB 973 227 6460 ABarber@HNTB.com)
