Transit Guy Gets with Pricing

“Let’s do the sensible thing and introduce market principles in severely congested corridors served by a rapid transit alternative. Just as the Eastern Europeans did away with bread lines by adopting market economics, we could do away with traffic congestion with market pricing of highway space. With the revenues we would raise by charging market prices on these highways, we could reduce taxes for everybody in the state. At the same time, we could reduce transit deficits because current passengers would be willing to pay a higher fare to avoid the highway toll.” Fred Williams of the Federal Transit Admin on congestion pricing list-serv forum recently.
