It isnt the first time the federal government spent one bunch of taxpayer dollars promoting something and another bunch of taxpayer dollars combating it. The classic case was tobacco, supported with grower price guarantees via the US Dep of Agr and fought with regulations, taxes and law suits from other US agencies. The same goes for roads now. Every American knows about the $215 billion highway bill to promote roads (TEA21) via the USDOT. But few know about how another US Gov agency, the USEPA is fighting roads and leveraging taxpayer funds to support over 300 anti-road activist groups around the country, while stretching to the maximum its own regulatory powers to block road construction. As the USEPAs attempt to dictate road design to the NJ Tpike (pXX) indicates these guys are quite crazy and it is time the spotlight was put on what they are doing.
