NEW YORK

Study on variable tolls

MTA, the great Gotham goliath which supposedly runs many varieties of moving stuff in New York City, as well as the toll bridges and tunnels wants a study done on variable tolls, we have firmly established. Made countless telephone calls to different people at MTA leaving ‘voice mails’ because everyone is busy meeting with everyone else (or goofing off?). Eventually we did get a realtime human on the phone and she said live that there was a 100-page paper which lays it out and that all we had to do was make a request for it in writing. So we dutifully tapped out a letter and faxed it. Weeks later, nothing. More phone calls. (Hey readers, this is why you employ this newsletter to do your research for you!) No wonder nothing ever happens any more in New York City, world capital of sloth, bumbling, broken promises, and general rudeness, we were thinking uncharitably, when out of the blue we got a phone call from the delightful, well-informed and (usually) enormously helpful press relations guy Robert Pascual... who godammit for once had to refer us to another office in another part of the MTA, where we were told the key person was “away this week, but someone else will call you back...” we got told. Oh yea? Like my dog’s promise to stop shedding fluff around the office.
