407 and Orlando Greeneway gets awards

407 Express Toll Route in Toronto got the award “Transportation Project of the Year for North America” from the American Public Works Association. It was the first time a Canadian project got the honor. An independent panel of judges selected 407 ahead of nine other finalists. Selection criteria included the uniqueness of the project, quality of design and construction, job safety, environmental and PR activities and the applicability of lessons learned to other projects.

And the Orlando-Orange Co Exwy Auth’s Central Florida Greeneway (FL-417) I-4 to US-17/92 got a “Top Roads” award from the AAA. It was one of 10 roads in the country to get the award. AAA said the selection of the road, which includes the recently completed Southern Connector section and is located at the far southwest of the OOCEA network. Selections were based on architecture, design, safety features, and bridge and pavement condition. The panel said the Greeneway stood out for the highest safety record in the state, its use of electronic tolling, the high quality of signage and lighting, and provisions for widening. The only other award in the urban freeway/parkway category was the Aqua Fria Fwy in Phoenix AZ west of I-17.
