Timothy J Carson vice chairman at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in its immediate tumultuous past emails today with a corporate announcement that he has joined Dilworth Paxson LLP the DC based law firm specializing in public finance, P3s and other innovative financing. He will work out of the company's Philadelphia offices.

NTTA have released video of a tractor trailer going off an I-30 overbridge westboundat their Grand Prairie interchange with the President George Bush Turnpike (SH161) and crashing to the Turnpike's main lanes, about 4pm Saturday. The big rig can be seen bursting into flames and police who happened to be nearby were unable to remove the driver before fire burned the tractor.
The driver was James Long a 59 year old trucker from Tennessee.
Recently after Kiewit and partners submitted a P3 proposal on the long studied South Mountain Freeway on the southeastern fringe of the Phoenix AZ metro area much of the media reported this as a private financing initiative.
South Mountain Development Group (SMDG) comprises only construction and engineering companies - Kiewit, Sundt Construction and Parsons. There is no financing partner at all.
Washington State DOT is advertising a Request for Qualification (RFQ) from marketing and advertising firms to "provide statewide toll educational marketing services." They say they are looking for a firm to provide "marketing expertise in support of a public outreach campaign that includes $2.3 million in educational marketing for I-405 express toll lanes."
They add there is a possibility of more work as other toll facilities come online in 2015 and 2016.
"...past GDP growth is not a good predictor of future GDP growth in part because there is a significant amount of measurement error in the numbers that are reported during the first few months. The revised numbers that come out much later are better at predicting future GDP, but by the time they're out, the future has already passed in most cases. The (stock) market is a better and timelier forecaster of future GDP, perhaps because the market has a financial stake in getting it right."

Renters of apartments nearby on the northside of Atlanta might like to claim free rent when the landlord pays off his mortgage!
It will be interesting to watch traffic congestion grow and how well this soon-to-die pike is maintained as a taxing road versus a user pays road.

Detroit has long been written off as broke so its recent filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy caused little market reaction. But reports from Chicago suggest that city may not be far behind Detroit, and its debts are much larger ($29b) and its financial collapse much less anticipated by the markets.
