Big bridge, tunnel girders from Freyssinet being junked at approach road to Detroit Windsor crossingsBy Peter Samuel on November 4, 2013
Freyssinet is almost synonymous with early innovations in reinforced concrete design and excellence in engineering. One of France’s most famous international engineering and construction companies for over a hundred years it was formed by Eugene Freyssinet (1879-1962) credited with being as one of the inventors of modern reinforced concrete.
“…Suppose that a used-car salesman assures a customer that this baby of a 2006 Honda Accord really and truly, cross-his-heart-and-hope-to-die, will never cost more than $100 in annual maintenance expenses. Then the buyer discovers that the car costs him $2,500 in annual maintenance expenses.
Full marks to the Penn Pike’s arrangements for helping a customer to transfer the E-ZPass to a new vehicle. They make it very straightforward. Tap in the make and color of the new vehicle and its license plate number.
Of course the ‘velcro’ mounting strips had to be left on the old vehicle so I worried about how to get a new set of those.
Just check a box ’New mounting strips,’ and two days later they arrive in the mail from the Pike’s E-ZPass Customer Service people.

I learned chess from my father who like most intellectuals from Central Europe at the time had two great loves of the mind - the music of Bach/Beethoven/Handel (he loathed Wagner) and chess. I played chess quite often with him when at home. And after I left home just occasionally on visits.
To play regularly you had to visit a lot or join a club because of the need to be together to play efficiently. I’m not a club joiner so my chess was irregular.
CTRMA, the Austin Texas region toller has in less than a decade managed the difficult feat of building lots of new roads in a community that is decidedly ‘green’ in its orientation. Their secret seems to have been a serious commitment to public outreach and working hard to communicate alternatives.
One way I pick up 'pikes in the news is having Google alerts set on words like toll, tollroad, tollgate and turnpike. "(T)urnpike" turns up bits and pieces on operating turnpikes, about half on the Penn Pike, half on all the other operating US Turnpikes (PA=ME+NJ+MA+NJ+WV+NC+KS+OH+FL+OK?)
I'm sure in H'burg they'll say that disproportion is simply because their's is about as important as all the others combined!
The Creek Turnpike's widening to 2x3 lanes in its busiest section was celebrated in Tulsa OK this week. The $60m Oklahoma Turnpike Authority project added travel lanes and a central concrete barrier to the inside in place of the grass median when the tollroad was built as 2x2 lanes.
South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) operator of the Atlantic City Expressway has re-hired Traffic Technologies Inc (TTI) as their in-house technology consultants in a new 5-year contract. They work to task, an arrangement where they quote for a given task or charge a set hourly rate.
