Midlands Expressway, owners of the M6Toll in Birmingham UK are using targeted popup ads to promote their pike. People at their computer using an internet based mapping service called Multimap get M6Toll popup ads when they call up a map near the tollroad. For all the talk of the CEN-278 EU-standard transponder the greatest growth in electronic tolling by far in Europe is in use of non-standard Italian Telepass transponders. As of end-Sept 2003 Autostrade SpA reports 3.78m transponders in use, an increase of 16% since the beginning of 2003.
